The Weather in Santa Fe
The locals are fond of saying, “If you don’t like the weather stick around 15 minutes.” Although we have over 300 days of sunshine, it’s not uncommon to have a quick rain shower or hail storm that leaves as quickly as it came. Generally, Santa Fe enjoys the most pleasant weather in the country all year round. However, we do have bad days and you’ll be able to come prepared after reading the tips in this article.
Weather Tips for Summer: Our monsoon season is summer when we often get our much needed rain showers in the afternoons. Summer visitors should bring along a lightweight waterproof jacket. The high desert nights are cold, even in the middle of summer so bring along a heavier jacket for evenings.
Weather Tips for Spring: Sand storms, otherwise known as dust storms are mostly experienced in the spring, but they can be occur anytime of the year. If you’re a contact wearer, be sure to bring along some eye drops and a pair of glasses.
Weather Tips for Fall: Although the temperature will reach the 70’s during the day, if you’re not directly in the sun it will feel much cooler so you may want to bring along a light sweater during the day. The nights begin to get cold right after sunset and a heavier jacket for nights out is a must.
Weather Tips for Winter: Even when the temperature is in the 40’s, when you’re walking around in the bright sunshine, you’ll feel like it’s much warmer. We only average 7 snowfalls in the winter, but come prepared to walk in the snow during your winter visits. The city and county of Santa Fe take good care of the roads and Interstates in and around the city so when we do get snow, transportation isn’t affected for very long if at all. Having a waterproof pair of shoes is a good idea since there’s nothing worse than cold wet feet while trying to enjoy your vacation.
Sunscreen and sunglasses are a must for anytime of the year. The altitude is 7,000 feet so the air tends to be thin and dry making for wonderful star gazing at night but some glare and sunburns during the day.
You’ll enjoy your Santa Fe vacation much more when you come prepared. And if you don’t like the weather when you get here, just stick around for 15 minutes.
